The Lock on smartcard removal policy setting does not work if there is unsaved work on the computer when you log off. When the workstation starts to lock, any programs that have unsaved work display dialog boxes that prompt you to save your work. These dialog boxes prevent the desktop from being locked. If you press Cancel or ignore the dialog box, you can continue to work if the smartcard is in the reader.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.
