SYMPTOMS

The Elan SL332 multifunction serial port PC Card uses two visual processing unit (VPU) chips (a 16550-compatible Universal Asynchronous Receiver transmitter [UART] that is designed for PCMCIA cards). However, when the COM ports are enumerated, the computer tries to start the device, but the serial port becomes disabled because the power for the port is turned off.

CAUSE

The I/O Limit register is an optional function configuration register on the card. Pcmcia.sys inadvertently tries to write this register even though the card has indicated that it does not support this register. During this attempted write, a 0x05 register is written to the configuration and status register. Bit 2 of this register (0x04) is interpreted by the device to turn off the function, as per the PCMCIA specification. The problem that is described in the "Symptoms" section of this article occurs because the Elan SL332 multifunction serial port PC Card implements exactly 8 bytes of configuration registers and decodes the lower 3 bits of address only.
