Desktop icon names do not appear correctly after you restart your Windows XP-based computer

After you restart your Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, you may notice that one or more Windows desktop icon names do not appear correctly.
This intermittent problem occurs because the desktop icon name contains end-user-defined characters (EUDCs), and because Windows loads the desktop component before it loads the EUDC component.

Hotfix informationA supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.
