When installing the SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 update from the Windows Update or Microsoft Update web site you may receive the following error:

Error Code 0x2b2f

Installation of MSXML 6 Service Pack 2 (KB954459) failed because a higher version already exists on the machine. To proceed, uninstall the higher version and then run MSXML 6 Service Pack 2 (KB954459) Setup again.

Cause

This error occurs when installing SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 to a computer that currently has MSXML6 Service Pack 2 installed. The SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 installation is attempting to upgrade the existing MSXML6 Service Pack 2 installation.
