When you use Data Protection Manager 2007 (DPM) to protect SQL Server on Windows Server 2003 you may find the jobs remain in a synchronizing state and never finish. The jobs do not respond to a cancel command and the protected server requires a restart in order to enable continued protection of the server.
Protection of other servers with DPM during this time may remain unaffected.
This issue is most frequently caused by a System State backup of the SQL Server being configured in a separate Protection Group. This may result in parallel execution of the jobs which results in contention in VSS and the SQL VSS Writer.
To prevent this, include the System State backup in the same Protection Group to guarantee serial execution of the backups. Alternatively schedule the System State job to run at a time when there are no other SQL backups occurring.
