External Content Type Designer in SharePoint Designer 2010 cannot discover claims aware WSDL endpoints

SYMPTOMS

You try to create an External Content Type by using Microsoft SharePoint Designer 2010 against a Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) service. This service has its Web Service Description Language (WDSL) behind a claims enabled endpoint. In this situation, you receive the following error message:
Metadata contains a reference that cannot be resolved.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because this is not a supported scenario for discovering WCF LobSystem in SharePoint Designer 2010.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, do not put the WSDL endpoints on a claims enabled endpoint.
