Errors or warnings for issues already fixed in current build of SharePoint may show if older DLL versions are also loaded at startup

Symptoms

A Sharepoint environment exhibits an error/warning that has already been fixed in its current build.

Cause

If there are previous builds of SharePoint DLL's in the path to the Global Assembly Cache (GAC) these DLL's will get loaded and used with the newer DLL's.  For example in the root of the DRIVE or anywhere along the path to the GAC.

Resolution

Using a utility like Process Explorer will show if multiple versions of a DLL are running and by reviewing the properties of the running DLL's it can be determined if any of the DLL's are an older version.
