SYMPTOMS

When you use a dual-boot system that includes Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition (SE), there is no option for accessing Windows 98 Safe mode. When you press F8, Windows 2000 Safe mode is your only option.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  1. When the startup menu is displayed, select Windows 98.
  2. Press and hold down SHIFT, and then press ENTER.
  3. Keep holding down SHIFT until Windows 98 is loaded.
  4. The words "Safe mode" should appear in all four corners of the screen to indicate that you are now operating in Windows 98 Safe mode.
