INTRODUCTION

Because AUX, CON, NUL, and PRN are reserved names in Microsoft Windows, Microsoft does not recommend that you use these names as site codes when you install System Management Server 2003 (SMS 2003), Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 (ConfigMgr 2007) or System Center 2012 - Configuration Manager (ConfigMgr 2012).

MORE INFORMATION

When you install the products mentioned above, Microsoft does not recommend that you use the following names as site codes:
  • AUX
  • CON
  • NUL
  • PRN
Several SMS and Configuration Manager components use the site code as a folder name, and because these names are reserved names in Windows, folders cannot be created with these names. These names are reserved in all versions of Windows.

Although you may not experience a problem when you install SMS or Configuration Manager and designate these site codes, you may experience problems later. For example, you may not be able to successfully install legacy clients or to correctly set up SMS 2.0 logon points because some folders cannot be correctly created.
