SYMPTOMS

When you insert a Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) image in Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003, the image may appear much darker than it appears in other programs.

If you insert this image in another Microsoft Office 2003 program, such as Microsoft Office Word 2003 or Microsoft Office Publisher 2003, the image appears as expected. However, after you save the document, close it, and then reopen the document, the image appears darker than it appeared originally.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you use a 48-bit TIFF image (16 bits per channel, RGB). PowerPoint 2003 immediately converts the image, while other Office 2003 programs convert the image after the document is saved. This conversion process typically darkens the image.

Note You can scan at 48-bits now with most photo scanners and film/slide scanners.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, convert the 48-bit TIFF image in a 24-bit TIFF image. To do so, use a program like Adobe PhotoShop or Jasc Paint Shop Pro to convert the image to 24-bit RGB color.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
