Symptoms

In Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, when you try to use the Create CD/DVD experience to create a CD or a DVD, you may receive the following error message:
INSERT MEDIA

Please insert writeable media that is compatible with your CD or DVD recorder, and then select Retry.

Cause

This problem may occur if either of the following conditions is true:
  • The wrong type of recordable disc is loaded into the recordable optical drive. For example, if you are trying to create a CD, you should have a recordable CD loaded, and if you are trying to create a DVD, you should have a recordable DVD loaded.
  • The computer is using a DVD-RAM drive that was not supported in the initial release of Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. For example, the problem is known to occur when you use the Matsushita DVD-RAM drive model UJ-846S. This drive was not supported in the initial release of Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.
