SYMPTOMS

You cannot start the ADO.NET Entity Data Model Designer in the Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1) Shell (integrated mode) unless you browse to and open an existing .edmx file. You also cannot create a new .edmx file by using the Visual Studio 2008 SP1 Shell (integrated mode).

Additionally, when you browse to an .edmx file in the Visual Studio 2008 SP1 Shell (integrated mode), and then you open the file, Visual Studio 2008 starts the ADO.NET Entity Data Model Designer. However, the Designer fails or stops responding.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you install Visual Studio 2008 SP1 Shell (integrated mode) on a comptuer that does not have a full installation of Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition or of Visual Studio 2008 Standard Edition. In this case, the ADO.NET Entity Data Model Designer is also installed, but Visual Studio 2008 SP1 Shell (integrated mode) does not support running the ADO.NET Entity Data Model Designer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
