FIX: You cannot run Data Profile Viewer to open a data profile in SQL Server 2008 or in SQL Server 2008 R2 when the server does not have the Integration Services component installed

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or in SQL Server 2008 R2: 
  • You install a management tool on a server. For example, you install the SQL Server Management Studio tool or the SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio tool on a server.
  • The Integration Services component is not installed on the server.
  • You run Data Profile Viewer to open a data profile file.
In this scenario, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
Error: The Data Profile Viewer requires Integration Services to be installed by one of these editions of SQL Server 2008: Standard, Enterprise, Developer, or Evaluation. To install Integration Services, run SQL Server Setup and select Integration Services.
Note By default, to start Data Profile Viewer, use one of the following methods:
  • Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2008, point to Integration Services and then click Data Profile Viewer.
  • Click Start, type C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\Binn\DataProfileViewer.exe in the Run box, and then click OK.

SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1

Note Because the builds are cumulative, each new fix release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release. Microsoft recommends that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains this hotfix. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 hotfixes are created for specific SQL Server service packs. You must apply a SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 hotfix to an installation of SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1. By default, any hotfix that is provided in a SQL Server service pack is included in the next SQL Server service pack.

SQL Server 2008 R2
