Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You connect to a Microsoft Team Foundation Server (TFS) 2008 server in Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

  • You double-click a build in Build Explorer to try to open a build report in Visual Studio 2010.

In this scenario, a System.NullReferenceException exception occurs, and then Visual Studio 2010 crashes. Additionally, you may receive the following error message:

TF50316: The following name is not valid. Verify that the name does not exceed the maximum character limit, only contains valid characters, and is not a reserved name

Note This issue does not occur if you connect to a TFS 2008 server in Visual Studio 2010 or if you connect to a TFS 2010 server in Visual Studio 2010 SP1.
