system repair and recovery can't restore my files____

Hi, I bought a second hand laptop which was originally a dell inspiron with Vista but had been upgraded to windows 7 by the original owner. Ever since I bought it some 9 months ago or so I did not
win 7 trys to boot but fails, starts system recovery but system repair finds nothing and system restore fails
Win 7 trys to boot, gets to fuel gage and colored dots but then fails. Sys recovery starts ok both normal and safe mode. Sys repair finds no errors, system restore finds previous auto restore point
