Windows NT Supports Multiple Data Streams Inconsistently

SUMMARY

The Win32 base application programming interface (API) supports multiple data streams inconsistently: some operations succeed, others do not. These inconsistencies manifest themselves in CMD.EXE: some commands support multiple data streams, others do not.

There is no method to work around this problem other than by avoiding multiple data streams. This inconsistency will be addressed in the next release of Windows NT.

The names of multiple data streams are identified by a colon (:) in the name. This convention may change in the future.
