SYMPTOMS

Packaging an object that has a fully qualified path of more than 64 letters results in a general protection (GP) fault in the Object Packager.

CAUSE

MS-DOS paths have a limit of 64 characters. The Object Packager does not correctly handle scenarios that involve File Manager paths greater than this limit.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Windows 3.1 Object Packager.

This problem does not occur with Object Packager 3.5 on Windows NT 3.5.

Steps to Reproduce

Create a directory structure in File Manager that results in a path greater than 64 characters. You must use File Manager because MS-DOS will not allow a directory structure this large to be created.
Use File Manager to copy a file into this new subdirectory. File Manager must be used because MS-DOS will not recognize this directory.
Select the file from within File Manager.
Choose Copy from the File menu.
Choose the Copy To Clipboard button to place the filename and path on the clipboard.
Launch CntOutl and Paste Link.
