Turning Off Print Job Logging in the System Log

By default, Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server log every print job processed by the server in the System Log. This article explains how to disable that logging.

Windows NT 3.1 and 3.5x

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious, system-wide problems that may require you to reinstall Windows NT to correct them. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your own risk.

Administrators who want to disable the logging of every print job can follow these steps:

1. Run REGEDT32.EXE.
2. Go to:
   
   \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Providers
3. From the Edit menu, choose Add Value.
4. In the Value Name field of the Add Value dialog box, type "EventLog" (without the quotation marks).
5. In the Data Type box, select REG_DWORD.
6. In the Dword Editor dialog box, type a 0 (zero) in the Data box.
7. Choose the OK button.
8. Quit REGEDT32.EXE.
9. If you are using Windows NT 3.1,restart the computer. If you are using Windows NT 3.5x, stop then restart the spooler service.

Windows NT 4.0

1. Select Start then Settings then Printers
2. From the File menu select Server Properties
3. Choose the Advanced tab
4. Select the desired logging options then choose OK
