When troubleshooting printing problems in Microsoft Publisher, keep in mind
that some issues may be caused by low printer memory or incorrect system
settings regarding the memory on a particular printer. With the Hewlett-
Packard (HP) LaserJet family of printers, running the printer's self-test
is a way to find out the exact amount of memory that is installed.
To find the amount of memory installed:
LaserJet Series II
- If the OnLine light is on, press the OnLine button to take the printer
off-line.
- Hold down the Print Fonts/Test button for 5 seconds.
The message 05 SELF TEST will appear on the LED readout screen.
- The printer will print its self-test sheet. This sheet will show the
total memory in bytes. Divide this number by 1024 to see how many
megabytes are available.
Most LaserJet Series III
- If the OnLine light is on, press the OnLine button to take the printer
off-line.
- Hold down the Menu button until the readout screen displays "test menu."
- Hold down the "-" button until the screen displays "self test."
- Press the Enter button.
- The printer will print its self-test sheet. This sheet will show the
total memory in bytes. Divide this number by 1024 to see how many
megabytes are available.
Most LaserJet Series IV
Correct steps for a self-test on the HP LaserJet IV are as follows:
- If the OnLine light is on, press the OnLine button to take the printer
off-line.
- Press the Menu button until the readout screen displays "test menu."
- Press the Item button once. The readout screen should display "self
test."
- Press the Enter button.
- The printer will print its self-test sheet. This sheet will show the
total memory in bytes. Divide this number by 1024 to see how many
megabytes are available.
Some LaserJet Series III and IV
- If the OnLine light is on, press the OnLine button to take the printer
off-line.
- Press the Test button.
