SYMPTOMS

When you open a project file, you may receive the following error message:
<Filename> is a global file and cannot be opened as a Microsoft Project document

Or,

the Organizer window opens up in Microsoft Project.

CAUSE

When you quit Microsoft Project, the program attempts to save any changes that have been made to the default file GLOBAL.MPT. If this file is opened in read-only mode or if it can't be saved to its original location, Microsoft Project will prompt you for a new name or location.

If, when you are prompted to save the GLOBAL.MPT file to a new name or location, you enter the filename and location of the current project, the following message is displayed:

The file <filename> already exists. Replace?
If you choose OK, the GLOBAL.MPT file is saved as the new name and your existing project file is overwritten.

For example, if Microsoft Project is installed on a network and more than one user is accessing the same GLOBAL.MPT file, all users but the first gain read-only access to the file. If a change is made to a toolbar and you attempt to quit Microsoft Project, you are prompted that the global template file was opened as a read-only file and you are asked if you would like to save it to a different location or with a new filename. If you enter the name of one of your current project files and you choose to overwrite the file, the file will be lost.

WORKAROUND

To avoid this behavior, ensure that all users have write access to their own copy of the GLOBAL.MPT file in their own working directory. Therefore, if a change to GLOBAL.MPT is made, the changes can be saved and the possibility of accidentally overwriting a project file with the global template file is minimized.
