SYMPTOMS

When you run Windows, the taskbar is not visible on the screen.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you have moved or resized the taskbar so that it is too small or is located in a position that is not visible.

RESOLUTION

To make the taskbar visible again, use either of the following methods:

Method 1

Resize the taskbar. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Press CTRL+ESC to select the taskbar and display the Start menu.
  2. Press the ESC key. The Start menu disappears, but the taskbar is still selected.
  3. Press ALT+SPACEBAR, and then click Size.
  4. Resize the taskbar using the mouse or the ARROW keys.

Method 2

Restart the computer in Safe mode. Restarting the computer in Safe mode restores the taskbar to its default location. To restart your computer in Safe mode, follow these steps:

Windows 95

Restart your computer. When you see the "Starting Windows 95" message, press the F8 key, and then choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu.

Windows 98 and Windows Me

Restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key after your computer completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu. For more information about Windows 98 startup, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
