WD: Document Number Not Incremented Correctly

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word, the document names are not incremented as expected.

Examples:

Case 1: When you start Word, the default document does not appear as document1. Instead, it is named document2, document3, and so on.

Case 2: When you create a new document in Word, the new document number is not incremented from the previous document number. For example, the first document is named document2, the next is named document4, and so on.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when both Word Mail and Word are running.

Examples:

Case 1: You started Word Mail and composed a new message before you started Word.

Case 2: You switched to Word Mail, composed a new message, and then switched back to Word.

When you use Word Mail to compose a mail message, a session of Word is activated. Although no document number appears in the Word Mail Compose Message window, the documents are being numbered. Each new message you create will increment the document number by one. As you switch between Word Mail and Word, and as you create new documents, the documents will be numbered sequentially between both sessions of Word. This behavior is by design.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Word 95 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Word 95a
  • Microsoft Word 97 Standard Edition
