When you are installing Windows, you may receive a general protection
(GP) fault error message after you accept the End User License Agreement.
The error message you receive is similar to the following message:
Suwin caused a GPF in 256_1280.drv at 0002:0D7B
This problem can occur if any of the following conditions exists:
- Your memory management software is incorrectly configured.
- Your computer has a GSI BIOS.
- Double-buffering is required for your hard disk, but it is not
- You have a Cirrus Logic video card driver installed that is
incompatible with the Windows Setup program.
- There is an anti-virus setting enabled in your computer's CMOS
To resolve this problem, use the appropriate method:
- Reconfigure the memory management software so that Windows Setup
finishes successfully. Refer to the memory management software's
documentation for assistance.
- If your computer has a GSI BIOS, please contact the computer's
manufacturer or your hardware vendor for more information.
- Enable double-buffering for your hard disk. You may need to contact
your manufacturer for assistance.
- Restart the computer and run the Windows Setup program from
- Some computers include an anti-virus feature that prevents programs
from writing to the boot sector of the hard disk. Such features may be
set in your computer's CMOS settings. If anti-virus protection is
running, Setup cannot finish the installation, or Windows does not
To work around this problem, disable the anti-virus feature in your
computer's CMOS settings and then run Setup again. Once you have
successfully completed Setup you can re-enable the anti-virus feature.
For information about how to change CMOS settings on your computer,
please contact your computer manufacturer.
When the GSI BIOS is queried about how many hard disks there are, it
returns three when there are actually only two. When queried about drive
82 (the third drive), the BIOS returns an invalid string that corrupts 1
byte of memory.
