When you use a Windows 95-based computer to copy a read-only file to a core SMB server (such as a LAN Manager for UNIX server), you may receive the following error message:
Error 5 - Access Denied
This occurs when using Explorer or XCOPY to copy the read-only file to the server. This does not occur when using File Manager.
This error message occurs because there is a mismatch between the way that the Windows 95 redirector accesses files and the way that core SMB servers expect this access.
To work around this issue, use the Windows 3.x File Manager tool (Winfile.exe) to copy the file. This tool is in your Windows folder.
A supported fix for Windows 95 that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to computers experiencing this specific problem. To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Technical Support to obtain the fix.
