OL2000: Differences Between Outlook and Outlook Express On This PageSUMMARY
This article describes how to use different servers for sending and
receiving Internet mail.
MORE INFORMATION
When you use the Internet Mail Service with Microsoft Exchange Server clients or with
Outlook Express, Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) is used solely for
receiving mail. Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is used solely for
sending mail on the Internet. Although most Internet service providers (ISPs) have both POP3 and SMTP set up on the same server, you may encounter
service providers that have different servers for these tasks. If you encounter such a provider, you can configure the Internet Mail Service to use different servers for sending and receiving mail. To configure the
Internet Mail Service to do so, use one of the following methods, as appropriate.
Exchange Server ClientsUse the following steps for Outlook 97, Outlook 98 installed with the Corporate or Workgroup option (CW), Outlook 2000 (CW), and Exchange Client.NOTE: To determine your Outlook installation type, click About Microsoft Outlook on the Help menu. In About Microsoft Outlook, you should see "Corporate or Workgroup" if you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation.
Outlook Express, Outlook 98 (IMO), and Outlook 2000 (IMO)Use the following steps for Outlook Express, Outlook 98 installed with the Internet Mail Only option (IMO), and Outlook 2000 (IMO).NOTE: To determine your Outlook installation type, click About Microsoft Outlook on the Help menu. In About Microsoft Outlook, you should see "Internet Mail Only" if you have the Internet Mail Only installation.
