MORE INFORMATION

NetMeeting Features

NetMeeting includes the following features:

  • You can use NetMeeting to call people at other computers over a local area network (LAN), over the Internet, over a standard telephone line (using a modem), over a serial (null modem) cable, or over an ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) line. If you are calling over a LAN or the Internet, you can call by specifying the Internet address, computer name, IP address, or IPX network number and Ethernet address of the computer you want to call. If you connect to a User Location Service (ULS) on the Internet, you can also call by specifying the name of a person in the directory maintained by the ULS.
  • NetMeeting 2.x capitalizes on the improved Internet Locator Servers (ILS) directory services. You can list users by different categories, features, or call status. NetMeeting also supports the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP).
  • NetMeeting 2.x supports H.323 audio and video. Support for the H.323 audio and video protocol enables NetMeeting to communicate with NetMeeting 2.x and other H.323-compatible clients. NetMeeting also implements MMX technology for both audio and video codecs improving performance and reducing CPU utilization. NetMeeting allows participants to switch audio and video to another person in a meeting.

NOTE: To use the audio features of NetMeeting, your computer must contain a sound card that is connected to a microphone and speakers, and must be running the TCP/IP protocol. NetMeeting includes an Audio Tuning Wizard that automatically configures NetMeeting to work with your sound card.
  • NetMeeting also supports H.323 gateways. You can use NetMeeting to make an audio call through an H.323 gateway to a standard telephone.
  • NetMeeting tracks your call history and maintains a speed dial list. Call history shows the time and date of incoming calls and show a status of accepted or ignored. The speed dial list keeps a list of 25 users and shows whether they are logged on to the ILS servers or not.
  • NetMeeting allows you to share a program with other people in an online meeting. When you share a program, you can use the program yourself and allow other people in the meeting to watch you use it, or you can allow other people in the meeting to use the program themselves.
  • NetMeeting includes a Whiteboard feature that allows online meeting participants to draw pictures and write text that can be used to illustrate an idea. When one person in a meeting runs Whiteboard, it appears on all screens. Everyone in the meeting can then draw on the Whiteboard simultaneously and see what other people are drawing.
  • NetMeeting includes a Chat feature that allows online meeting participants to send typed messages to each other. When one person in a meeting runs Chat, it appears on all screens. NetMeeting 2.0 Chat includes a new Whisper feature that allows you send a private text message to a particular person in the conference.
  • NetMeeting includes a File Transfer feature that allows you to send a file to all the participants in a meeting by dragging the file to the NetMeeting window. You can also send a file to one participant by using the right mouse button to click the participant in the NetMeeting window, and then clicking Send File on the menu that appears.
  • NetMeeting allows all the participants in a meeting to share a common Clipboard. When one person in a meeting copies data to the Clipboard, all participants can then paste the data into documents on their computer.
NetMeeting is based on the ActiveX Conferencing platform and conforms to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) T.120 conferencing specification. It is compatible with any other conferencing program that is based on this specification, such as ShareVision from Creative Labs, ProShare Conferencing Video System from Intel Corporation, and LiveShare Plus from PictureTel Corporation.
