Symptoms

An attempt to run the "sp_spaceused syslogs,@updateusage=true" (without quotation marks) command from command line isql within a database that has not been set to single-user mode fails as follows:

SQL Server 6.0 or 6.5 in Windows NT 3.51

The following error message appears:
Msg 2595, Level 16, State 90
Database 'test' must be set to single-user mode before executing
this command. DBCC execution completed. If DBCC printed
error message, see your System Administrator.

Then the following error message appears:
isql.exe
The instruction at "0x10207d36" referenced memory at "0x00040029."
The memory could not be "written."

SQL Server 6.5 in Windows NT 4.0

The error message mentioned above (Msg 2595) does not appear; however, the calling process stops responding (hangs) and must be terminated.

Some GUI Applications

The command runs to completion from a graphical user interface (GUI) application and returns a result set after the error mentioned above (Msg 2595) appears.

Workaround

Set the database to single-user mode before you run the command.
