When you install the downloadable version of Microsoft Personal Web Server
to a computer running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, you receive the following
error message at the end of Setup:
Can't run 16-bit Windows program. This application is not supported by Microsoft Windows NT.
Svctrl.exe - Entry Point Not Found The procedure entry point ConvertToGlobalHandle could not be located In the dynamic link library KERNEL32.DLL. NOTE: This issue applies only to Microsoft Personal Web Server for Windows 95 version 1.0 and 1.0a. Microsoft Personal Web Server Version 4.0 is also designed for use with Microsoft Windows NT Workstation version 4.0. Microsoft Personal Web Server for Windows 95 version 1.0a is located on the Microsoft FrontPage 97 and Microsoft FrontPage 98 CD-ROM. CAUSE
The downloadable version of Personal Web Server is designed to run in
Microsoft Windows 95 only. It does not run in Windows NT.
Windows NT Workstation 4.0 supports only Microsoft Peer Web Services, included on the Windows NT Workstation CD-ROM. Windows NT Server 4.0 supports only Microsoft Internet Information Server, which is included on the Windows NT Server CD-ROM. RESOLUTION
Remove Personal Web Server for Windows 95 using the method listed below
and then install the Web services included with your version of Windows NT
4.0.
NOTE: You must remove Personal Web Server first. If you do not, the Web services for Windows NT will install the World Wide Web (WWW) or file transfer protocol (FTP) services incorrectly. Although you will not receive any error message, the only service you will be able to run is the Gopher service. Removing Personal Web ServerThe Personal Web Server uninstall program does not run in Windows NT. To remove Personal Web Server for Windows 95, you must manually delete the folders in which the program was installed and manually remove the entries created in the registry.WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious, system-wide problems that may require you to reinstall Windows NT to correct them. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your own risk.
