XL97: Using Adobe Acrobat 3.0 PDFWriter with MS Excel 97

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 97, when you click Page Setup on the File menu, you may receive the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
If you click Details, an error message similar to the following appears
EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module MSO97.DLL at <address>.
where <address> is an alphanumeric value that represents an address in memory.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur when the following conditions are true:

You install the Adobe Acrobat PDFWriter, version 3.0, printer driver on the computer. -and-

You specify the PDFWriter printer driver when you set the default printer.

RESOLUTION

To prevent this behavior from occurring, perform one of the following steps:

Do not specify the PDFWriter printer driver when you set the default printer in the Control Panel (double-click the Printers icon). -or-

Upgrade to Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows, Service Release 1.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows, Service Release 1.

This behavior does not occur when you use version 3.0 of the Adobe Acrobat Reader. This product is designed to work with Microsoft Office for Windows. Note that when you run the Acrobat 3.0 Setup program, it installs macros in the Startup folder for Microsoft Excel and Word for Windows 95.

Adobe provides a PostScript printer driver, AdobePS 4.1, and the Distiller Assistant as part of the Acrobat 3.0 package. You can use the printer driver and the Distiller Assistant to create the package information file (PDF) file. You can find information about setting up and using both the printer driver and the Distiller Assistant in the Readme file that is provided with Acrobat 3.0.
