PPT97: TARGA Transparency Information Ignored

SYMPTOMS

If you import a TARGA (.tga) file that contains transparency (alpha channel) information into PowerPoint 97, it appears opaque. In contrast, if you import a CompuServe GIF (.gif) or Portable Network Graphics (.png) file that contains transparency information, it appears transparent.

CAUSE

The TARGA import filter that ships with PowerPoint 97 and Office 97 does not support transparency. The GIF and PNG import filters do support transparency.

WORKAROUND

You can use the Set Transparent Color button on the Picture toolbar or Microsoft Photo Editor to make any image transparent. For more information on doing this, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
