SYMPTOMS

If you import a TARGA (.tga) file that contains transparency (alpha channel) information into PowerPoint 97, it appears opaque. In contrast, if you import a CompuServe GIF (.gif) or Portable Network Graphics (.png) file that contains transparency information, it appears transparent.

CAUSE

The TARGA import filter that ships with PowerPoint 97 and Office 97 does not support transparency. The GIF and PNG import filters do support transparency.
