XL97: Lotus 1-2-3 Version 5.0 File wth Bitmap Hangs MS Excel 97

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 97, when you open a Lotus 1-2-3 version 5.0 .wk4 file, you may receive the following error message:
This program has Performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
If you click Details, you receive an error message similar to the following:
EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module EXCEL.EXE at 015f:30499502.

CAUSE

This error message occurs when the .wk4 file contains an embedded bitmap graphic.

WORKAROUND

To corect this problem, install Microsoft Excel 97 Service Release 1 (SR-1).

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:
  • Remove the embedded bitmap from the .wk4 file before you attempt to open the document in Microsoft Excel 97. -or-

  • Open, and then save the .wk4 file in Microsoft Excel version 7.0 before you open the file in Microsoft Excel 97.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel SR-1.
