XL97: Lotus 1-2-3 Version 5.0 File wth Bitmap Hangs MS Excel 97

In Microsoft Excel 97, when you open a Lotus 1-2-3 version 5.0 .wk4 file, you may receive the following error message: If you click Details, you receive an error message similar to the following:

This error message occurs when the .wk4 file contains an embedded bitmap graphic.

To corect this problem, install Microsoft Excel 97 Service Release 1 (SR-1).

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:

• Remove the embedded bitmap from the .wk4 file before you attempt to open the document in Microsoft Excel 97. -or-
  
  
• Open, and then save the .wk4 file in Microsoft Excel version 7.0 before you open the file in Microsoft Excel 97.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel SR-1.
