XL97: "Features Not Supported" Error Message Saving Workbook

SYMPTOMS

When you open a workbook that was created in an earlier version of Microsoft Excel, and then save the workbook, the following error message appears:
This workbook contains features that are not supported by the file format you selected. To avoid the possible loss of formatting or information, be sure to save a copy in the most recent Microsoft Excel Workbook format.
When you click OK, the file is saved.

NOTE: This message occurs even if you don't make any changes in the file.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you do the following:
  • You open a file that was created in an earlier version of Microsoft Excel. -and-

  • The workbook contains a chart with a chart area formatted with a pattern instead of a solid color. -and-

  • You save the workbook in the Microsoft Excel 5.0/95 Workbook (*.xls) format.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, install Microsoft Excel 97 Service Release 1 (SR-1).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel SR-1.
