This article describes how to create an Smtp.log file for Outlook Express.

You can use the Smtp.log file to troubleshoot problems that may occur when you send e-mail in Outlook Express using the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP).

To create an Smtp.log file, use the following steps:

  1. Start Outlook Express.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. On the Advanced tab, under Logging Options, click the Mail Transport check box to select it.
  4. Click Apply, and then click OK.
For Windows 98, the Smtp.log file is created and stored in the Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Mail folder.
