WD98: Suppress Endnotes Option Unavailable

When you try to suppress endnotes at the end of a section, the setting on the Layout tab (when you click Document on the Format menu) is not available.

The Suppress Endnotes option is not available because you have not designated endnotes to be printed at the end of each section.

The Suppress Endnotes option prevents endnotes from being printed at the end of a section. When you insert endnotes, you can place them at the end of the document or at the end of a section if you have multiple sections in your document. If you specify that endnotes should be printed at the end of the document, the Suppress Endnotes option will not be available because this setting already prints the endnotes at the end of the document. However, if you place endnotes at the end of a section, they will be printed at the end of the section unless you select the setting for Suppress Endnotes. With this setting selected, the endnotes will be printed at the end of the document.

To select where your endnotes will be placed, follow these steps:

1. On the Insert menu, click Footnote.
2. Under Insert, select Endnote.
3. Click Options and select the All Endnotes tab.
4. In the Place At box, select End Of Section.
5. Click OK.
6. Click OK or Close if you do not want to insert a footnote or an endnote.

If you specified that endnotes should be printed at the end of a section and you instead want them to be printed at the end of the document, turn on the Suppress Endnote option. To do this, follow these steps:

1. On the Format menu, click Document.
2. Select the Layout tab, and then select the Suppress Endnotes check box.
3. Click OK.

Note that default behavior for Word is to print endnotes at the end of the document.
