SUMMARY

TWAIN is a technology used to acquire an image directly from a scanner and insert it into your document or publication. Because Publisher is TWAIN- compliant, it installs the following TWAIN components:
Twain.dll Twain_32.dll Twunk_16.exe Twunk_32.exe
Publisher Setup copies these files into your Windows folder.

For a program to be TWAIN-compliant, it must install at least these four files.

MORE INFORMATION

These files by themselves are not enough to enable TWAIN on your computer. As a minimum, you must have the following additional components:
  1. A scanner and the real mode, 16-bit or 32-bit protect mode hardware drivers that the scanner requires.
  2. A folder called TWAIN within your Windows folder.
  3. A scanner-specific dynamic link library file with a .ds file name extension. This .ds file can be either a 16-bit or 32-bit dynamic link library. It must be located in the Windows\TWAIN folder or in a folder beneath the Windows\TWAIN folder.

This file actually controls the scanner. It may require additional support files.
The components that Publisher installs do the following.

Twain.dll

This dynamic-link library contains the programming commands necessary to control a 16-bit TWAIN scanner driver.

Twain_32.dll

This dynamic-link library contains the programming commands necessary to control a 32-bit TWAIN scanner driver.

Twunk_16.exe

This program allows 16-bit TWAIN client software to communicate with Twain_32.dll.

Twunk_32.exe

This program allows 32-bit TWAIN client software to communicate with the 16-bit Twain.dll.

The TWAIN components installed by Publisher are designed to work with both 32-bit and 16-bit scanner software. This means that if you have a 16-bit graphics program that supports TWAIN, you should still be able to use it after you install Publisher.
