You can edit and save pages in a Web under Visual Source Safe (VSS) control
without checking them out. If the FrontPage 97 Server Extensions are installed on the server and someone else does not have the file checked out, you can check it out under your name but you cannot check it in. MORE INFORMATION
This behavior is a feature of the FrontPage client when working in a VSS
controlled Web. It automates the check out and check in processes.
FrontPage automatically updates files in a VSS controlled Web when updating
the following items:
Updating Include Page ComponentsIf the Web is under VSS control and the including page is opened by someone else, the including page is updated automatically and a new version is not created.NOTE: If the FrontPage 97 Server Extensions are installed on the server, the including page is not updated if it is open by someone else. However, the including page is updated when it is checked in and the Web is recalculated. Updating Pages Used for Background StylesIf the FrontPage Web is under VSS control and the page that is using the style page for background style is checked out, then the page is updated.
NOTE: A new version of the checked out page is not created.
Updating Hyperlinks When Renaming Files or FoldersIf the Web is under VSS control and the page that contains the hyperlink is checked out by someone else, you will receive a message from the server notifying you that the page is checked out. The page will not be renamed and the hyperlink will not be updated.Updating Shared Border FilesIf the Web is under VSS control, the shared border file will be checked out, saved to the Web, and then checked in. When you check out a file that contains shared borders, FrontPage does not check the individual shared border files. Hence, someone else can modify the shared border files. You can prevent this from happening by checking out each shared border file individually.Updating Navigation Bars and Page BannersIf someone else checks out a page, you can change the location of the file or rename the file in Navigation view. The navigation bars or page banners are updated in all pages even if they are checked out.SUMMARY
You can edit and save pages in a Web under Visual Source Safe (VSS) control
without checking them out. When you save a file that you do not have
checked out, several processes occur in the background while the page is
being saved to the current FrontPage Web. FrontPage first attempts to check
out the file. If someone else has the file checked out, you will receive a
server error notifying you that the page is checked out, and the page will
not be saved. If someone else does not have the file checked out, you can
check out the file, save it to the Web, and then check it in.
If the FrontPage 97 Server Extensions are installed on the server and someone else does not have the file checked out, you can check it out under your name but you cannot check it in. REFERENCES
