WD98: Special Characters in Equation Displayed as Empty Boxes, Question Marks

When you open a Word for Windows document that contains equations with special characters or symbols in Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition, the special characters or symbols may map to the wrong font causing them to display incorrectly (for example, they may be displayed as tiny squares on the page). When you print the document, the equations are printed without the special characters or symbols.

This problem has been corrected in a new Metafile Filter for Word 98 Macintosh Edition. For information about obtaining this filter, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: To temporarily work around this problem, open and close the equation in Equation Editor by following these steps:

1. Double-click the equation you want to update.
2. Close Equation Editor.
3. On the File menu, click Save.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

In Equation Editor, you can add symbols that are special characters used to build equations. Related symbols are grouped together on palettes that you select by clicking a button on the Equation Editor toolbar. The Symbol palettes are essentially an extension of your keyboard. Choosing a symbol inserts it into your equation in the same way that pressing a key inserts a character.
