XL97: Errors Activating Embedded Object Containing PivotTable

SYMPTOMS

When you try to double-click or update a Microsoft Excel worksheet object that is contained in a file that was created in another program, such as Microsoft Word, you may receive the following error messages:
Unable to obtain PivotTable data from disk.
-and-
Memory was used up attempting to convert and save. PivotTables(s) will be refreshed upon the first update.
-and-
Cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or you may be trying to access a read-only location. Or the server the document is stored on may not be responding.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

  • The Excel worksheet contains a PivotTable. -and-

  • You have created the Excel worksheet in an earlier version of Excel. -and-

  • You are opening the embedded Excel object in Excel 97.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, obtain Microsoft Word 97 Service Release 2 (SR- 2).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 97 Service Release 2 (SR-2).
