XL97: "File Not Found" Error Activating Excel Object

SYMPTOMS

When you right-click an embedded Microsoft Excel worksheet contained in a Microsoft Word 97 document, point to Worksheet Object on the shortcut menu, and then click Open, you may receive the following error messages:
Microsoft Excel
File not found
-and-
Microsoft Word
Word cannot edit the Microsoft Excel Worksheet.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following circumstances are true:
In Microsoft Word version 6.0 or Microsoft Word version 7.0, you embed a Microsoft Excel file into your document. -and-

The Excel file contains a Visual Basic for Applications module sheet. -and-

You perform the following steps:

1. You right-click the embedded Excel object, point to Worksheet Object on the shortcut menu, and then click Open.
2. In Excel, you click "Close & Return to <Document>", where <Document> is the name of the Word document.
3. You right-click the embedded Excel object, point to Worksheet Object on the shortcut menu, and then click Open.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, obtain Microsoft Excel 97 Service Release 2 (SR-2).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 97 Service Release 2 (SR-2).
