Description of Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1

This article describes Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1 (SP1). Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1 (version 4.72.3110.8) is an update to Internet Explorer 4.0 and 4.01.

Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1 (version 4.72.3110.8) includes the following changes to Internet Explorer 4.01 (version 4.72.2106.8):

Previous Patches Are All Included

All previously released Internet Explorer 4.0 and 4.01 browser security patches are included in Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1. This includes the "Freiburg" Text-Viewing and Page Redirect patches for Internet Explorer 4.0 for Windows 95 and Windows NT, the Buffer Overrun patch for Internet Explorer 4.0 for Windows 95, and the MK Overrun and Embed Buffer Overrun patches for Internet Explorer 4.0 and 4.01 for Windows 95 and Windows NT.

Setup Changed to Prevent Installing Over SP1

Setup is modified to prevent installation of an older version of Internet Explorer 4.0 or 4.01 over Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1 but still allow custom branding. Therefore:

• On the first installation, only the branding, custom components, folder, and desktop items are processed. The previous Internet Explorer browser and other add-on component installations are skipped.
• On the second or subsequent attempts to install a previous version of Internet Explorer 4.0 or 4.01 over Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1, Setup displays the following message:
  Setup has detected that the newest versions of Internet Explorer components are already installed. Click OK to exit Setup without making any changes.

Removed Missing Uninstall Files Dialog Box

When you install Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1 on a computer that does not have Internet Explorer uninstall files, you no longer see a message indicating that the uninstall feature has been disabled. The unavail- ability of the uninstall option in the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel can still be used to determine if you can uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0 or 4.01.

Additionally, the following issues in Internet Explorer 4.0 or 4.01 are addressed in Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1:

• If a Web site uses a cookie with a 2-digit year of "00," Internet Explorer recognizes the cookie as expired. As a result, Internet Explorer behaves as if cookies have been disabled when visiting the Web site.
  
  NOTE: Cookies with 4-digit expiration dates, or expiration dates before and after the year 2000, work correctly.
• If a Web server communicates a 2-digit year of "00" in its HTTP/1.0 header, Internet Explorer recognizes pages on that site as expired. Although it caches them, they may expire earlier than expected. Browsing the site works normally while you are connected, but the site may not be available for offline browsing.
• When you are running Microsoft Outlook Express, you receive an invalid page fault (IPF) error message in Kernel32.dll when you are downloading news messages and your modem disconnects.
• You cannot print from Internet Explorer or Outlook Express after you log off and then log on again. If you print a Web page or HTML message from Internet Explorer or Outlook Express, log off, and then log back on without rebooting, you cannot print from any program until you restart Windows. Print jobs remain in the print queue or the print queue is paused.
• In Microsoft NetMeeting, the maximum capture frame rate is incorrectly kept below 17 frames per second (fps). On high-bandwidth connections, the highest frame rate is approximately 17 fps. The maximum frame rate is now approximately 30 fps. Results will vary depending on your hardware configuration. For example, a Pentium Pro or Pentium II processor is required on both ends to achieve 30 fps.
