OL98: Message Body Prints Only First Page to HP LaserJet 5L

When you print a mail message using the Memo style to a Hewlett Packard (HP) LaserJet 5L printer using the HP LaserJet 5L driver from HP, the message body may not print. Only the first page may print correctly and then print each of the following pages with only the page number.

NOTE: The same problem reportedly occurs using the HP LaserJet 6L and LaserJet 6P using the corresponding HP LaserJet drivers.

There are four methods to setup the HP LaserJet 5L printer:

• Install the HP Host-Based Driver
• Install the HP LaserJet 4L Printer Driver (networked or local)
• Change the Print Resolution
• Change the default Graphics Mode to HPGL2.

Install the HP Host-Based Driver

Download the latest HP 5L printer driver from HP and install the HP Host Based driver. Contact HP for help with the installation of this printer driver.

Install the HP LaserJet 4L Printer Driver for a Network Printer

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
2. Double-click to start the Add Printer Wizard. Click Next.
3. Click to select Network printer, and then click Next
4. Type the network path or name for your printer. Click Next.
5. Type a name for the printer or accept the name as is, and then click Next.
6. You can also click Yes to print a test page when the installation is done, otherwise, click No and then click Next.

Install the HP LaserJet 4L Printer Driver for a Local Printer

1. Click Start, and point to Settings, and then click printers.
2. Double-click to start the Add Printer Wizard. Click Next.
3. Click to select Local printer, and then click Next.
4. On the Manufacturers window on the left, click to select HP. Under the Printers window on the right click to select HP LaserJet 4L, and then click Next.
5. In the Available Ports window, verify the connection and click Next.
6. Type a name for your printer or accept the current name, and then click Next.
7. Click to select whether you want to print a test page for the printer, and then click Finish.

Change the Print Resolution

Using the HP LaserJet (PCL) printer driver, follow these steps:

1. Click the Windows Start button, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
2. Right-click the HP LaserJet 5L icon, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu.
3. Click the Print Quality tab.
4. Click Primarily Text Printing. Click OK.

Print again from Outlook.

Change the Default Graphics Mode to HPGL2

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Printers.
2. Click to select the HP LaserJet 5L or 6L printer.
3. On the File menu, verify there is a check beside Set As Default.
4. On the File menu, click Properties, and click the Print Quality tab.
5. Change the Print Optimization Setting to Manual Settings, and then click Settings.
6. Change the Graphics Mode to HPGL2 and click OK.
7. Click OK to save the changes and exit the Print Quality dialog.
8. Close Printers.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Outlook 98.
