Archive Bit Is Not Set with File or Directory Rename

SYMPTOMS

If you rename a file or directory on a FAT partition, the archive bit and modification time may not be set correctly. This can cause some backup applications to skip the affected files or directories during backup. You may also see the backup stop responding (hang) or fail completely.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows NT 4.0 and Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4.0 and Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition Service Pack 4.
