SYMPTOMS

When you start Windows 98, your Toshiba Tecra 750 computer may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if all of the following conditions exist:

Your computer contains an integrated drive electronics (IDE) CD-ROM drive.
The IDE controller to which the CD-ROM drive is connected is using the driver included with Windows 98.
You enable direct memory access (DMA) support for the CD-ROM drive.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:

Turn off your computer.
Remove the CD-ROM drive from your computer.
Restart your computer.
Install the Toshiba drivers for the IDE controller. If you do not have the drivers on a floppy disk, obtain them from Toshiba Technical Support or Toshiba's Web site.
Shut down your computer.
Put the CD-ROM drive back into your computer.
Restart your computer.

This behavior is caused by the IDE chip set used by Toshiba Tecra 750 computers.
