Display Set to Unsupported Video Mode During SBS Installation

SYMPTOMS

When you install Small Business Server (SBS) on a computer that has a video card that only supports low resolutions, the screen will become unreadable or unusable. You have to reboot to VGA mode to use the system.

CAUSE

By default, the SBS installation sets the video to 800 x 600 x 16 colors at 60 Hz.

RESOLUTION

Either update the computer to a video card that supports a higher resolution, or, after restarting, select to start to VGA mode and set the resolution manually.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Edition. We are researching this bug and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
