How to Edit the Autoexec.bat File in Microsoft Windows 98

This article describes how to edit the Autoexec.bat file in Microsoft Windows 98.

To temporarily edit the Autoexec.bat file in Windows 98 for diagnostic purposes:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
3. In the System Configuration Utility window, click the Autoexec.bat tab.
4. To temporarily remove a line from the Autoexec.bat file for diagnostic purposes, click to clear the check box next to the line that you want to remove.
5. When you finish editing the Autoexec.bat file, click OK.
6. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

To restore the Autoexec.bat file:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
3. On the General tab, click Normal startup - load all device drivers and software, and then click OK.
4. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

To permanently edit the Autoexec.bat file in Windows 98:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
3. In the System Configuration Utility window, click the Autoexec.bat tab.
4. To add a new line to the Autoexec.bat file, click New, type the line that you want to add, and then press ENTER.
   
   To change an existing line, click the line that you want to change, click Edit, type the changes that you want, and then press ENTER.
   
   To move a line up or down in the Autoexec.bat file, click the line that you want to move, and then click Move Up or Move Down.
5. When you finish editing the Autoexec.bat file, click the General tab.
6. Under Startup selection, click Normal startup - load all device drivers and software, and then click OK.
7. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
