Windows Media Player can play many different multimedia file formats as
streamed or local content. Windows Media Player can play the following
multimedia file formats:
Windows MediaFile name extensions: .asf, .asxRealNetworks RealAudio, and RealVideo (version 4.0 or earlier)File name extensions: .ra, .ram, .rm, .rmmAudio Visual Interleave (AVI)File name extension: .aviMoving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG 1 and MPEG 2)File name extensions: .mpg, .mpeg, .m1v, .mp2, .mpa, .mpeNOTE: MPEG 2 requires third party software or hardware decoders. Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI)File name extensions: .mid, .rmiApple QuickTime, Macintosh AIFF ResourceFile name extensions: .qt, .aif, .aifc, .aiff, .movSun Microsystems and NeXTFile name extensions: .au, .sndAudio for WindowsFile name extension: .wavNOTE: Vendors can create filters so that Windows Media Player can play other multimedia file formats. Microsoft only supports RealNetworks formats (and again, only 4.x or below) that have been upgraded from an earlier version of the player with RealNetworks support included.
