Windows Media Player can play many different multimedia file formats as streamed or local content. Windows Media Player can play the following multimedia file formats:

Windows Media

File name extensions: .asf, .asx

RealNetworks RealAudio, and RealVideo (version 4.0 or earlier)

File name extensions: .ra, .ram, .rm, .rmm

Audio Visual Interleave (AVI)

File name extension: .avi

Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG 1 and MPEG 2)

File name extensions: .mpg, .mpeg, .m1v, .mp2, .mpa, .mpe

NOTE: MPEG 2 requires third party software or hardware decoders.

Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI)

File name extensions: .mid, .rmi

Apple QuickTime, Macintosh AIFF Resource

File name extensions: .qt, .aif, .aifc, .aiff, .mov

Sun Microsystems and NeXT

File name extensions: .au, .snd

Audio for Windows

File name extension: .wav

NOTE: Vendors can create filters so that Windows Media Player can play other multimedia file formats.

Microsoft only supports RealNetworks formats (and again, only 4.x or below) that have been upgraded from an earlier version of the player with RealNetworks support included.
