GP Fault or Access Violation When Buffer Too Small

SYMPTOMS

You may receive a general protection fault (GP fault) or access violation (AV) in an application when arranging arrays of interface pointers. The engine puts the array itself in the buffer twice.

CAUSE

The first time random values are used, meaning the array is skipped, and then the next time actual pointer values are used. This causes the engine to GP fault because the buffer is not big enough when all the pointers are NULL.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows NT 4.0 or Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows NT 4.0 and Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4.0 and Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition Service Pack 4.
