Random Characters Are Displayed at the Bottom of a Web Page

SYMPTOMS

When you use Internet Explorer version 4.01 to connect to a Web server, a random character may appear at the bottom of the Web page.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if either or both of the following conditions exist:

  • The Web server sent Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) packets with an incorrect Content-Length.
  • The Web server sent HTTP packets with no content-length field in them.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain and install Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2. You can obtain Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2 from the following Microsoft Web site:
