When you try to install Windows 95 or Windows 98 on your IBM ThinkPad 701c computer, you may receive the following error message:
GRPCONV has performed an illegal Operation

Explorer caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module KERNEL32.DLL at 015F:BFF72825

Turning the computer off and back on may allow Setup to finish, but you may continue to receive similar error messages.

The IBM ThinkPad 701c was designed for Microsoft Windows 3.1. This computer requires a BIOS upgrade to be compatible with Plug and Play before it can be upgraded to Windows 95. IBM does not recommend installing Windows 98 on this computer.

Before you upgrade your IBM ThinkPad 701c to Windows 95, obtain and install the BIOS upgrade from the following IBM Web site:

Download the following files:

  • Sys7013o.exe
  • Sys7013o.txt
The Sys7013o.txt file contains instruction on performing the BIOS upgrade.

NOTE: You need a fully charged battery to perform this upgrade. If the battery is not fully charged, you might damage the motherboard. IBM will not cover this under their original warranty.
